Beyond lived experience: choosing effective candidates for identified roles

Roles that centre diversity, equity and inclusion research and practice should be filled by candidates with lived experience. For recruitment teams outside these communities, however, it is not always clear what to consider or what to ask in an interview. This article offers considerations for recruiting into roles with diversity, equity or inclusion responsibilities. Although the examples draw primarily from disability, many of the principles are relevant across other identified positions. (September 2026)
