Think UDL podcast: Your UDL Network Will Change the System with Matt Brett

Dr Matt Brett, Director, Academic Governance and Standards at Deakin University, joined Lillian Nave on the Think UDL podcast after they met at the Australian UDL Symposium in Hobart in June, where Matt ran a masterclass on leading UDL implementation.

Matt, who leads the national Capacity Building Fund project hosted by ACSES, talks about growing up with deaf parents and how that shaped his commitment to fairness in education. He argues that you don't need a senior title to lead UDL. What matters is your network and how knowledge moves through your institution. His advice is to set aside even a small amount of time to build those connections and gather evidence of what works.

He also discusses his recent report on how Australian universities talk about disability and UDL on their websites. Only around 14% mention disability on their main admissions page. Every university has a policy on reasonable adjustments, yet none mention disability in their overarching policy framework. His point is that we've been counting students with disability rather than looking at the learning environments we create.
