Challenging settled notions of equity, and what it might become, and consider the work of imagining – and building – more equitable futures.
When we speak of equity in graduate employability, we talk about who gets opportunities, who is supported, and who gets a fair chance to succeed. We talk less about the futures those opportunities are meant to lead to, and the work involved in creating them. Inspired by punk's commitment to questioning assumptions, its inventiveness, and its will to create alternatives, this discussion explores how higher education can help students develop the capacity to navigate uncertainty, exercise agency, and shape the futures they will inherit.
The future is NOW! An equitable educational experience is about more than meeting students where they are. It is about education's transformative potential: enabling students to become something they did not yet know they could be. This means enabling all students to build enduring capabilities that help them chart their own course in an unknowable future, and contribute meaningfully to a more equitable world.
The FutureFocus GenAI Program
led by Danni Hamilton and Lauren Hansen, brought academics and industry together to explore what it means to prepare students for a future we cannot predict. Its six curriculum-wide recommendations act as an equity mechanism, bringing ethics, interdisciplinarity, and career development together in a deeply transformative educational experience.
In this conversation, Danni and Lauren join David Eckstein to grapple with a deceptively difficult question: what happens to our understanding of equity when the future itself is uncertain? Together, they challenge settled notions of what equity is, and what it might become, and consider the work of imagining – and building – more equitable futures.
An event not to be missed! (Although if you can’t make it on the day, a recording will be available after the event.)
