Supporting Students with Disability in VET

Students with disability are still not participating, completing or moving into work at the same rate as other students. Much of what drives that sits in how training is designed and delivered, which is where providers have the most room to make a difference.

Revised Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) took effect on 1 July 2025. They position accessibility and disability as part of ordinary quality practice rather than a separate obligation, alongside existing responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. In practice, RTOs need to be able to show that:

  • information for students with disability is clear
  • support planning happens early
  • assessment is fair
  • learning resources are accessible
  • learning environments are accessible and inclusive
  • work integrated learning is safe, accessible and fit for purpose
  • wellbeing strategies are in place
  • governance systems monitor whether all students can participate and progress

The resources linked below are designed to help RTOs build the organisational capability to do this.
