Acknowledging the Migrant and Refugee Communities
To all the migrant and refugee communities who have spared their time, at no price, to make this gathering possible. To the elders, the women, the youth, the children and men who came to the consultations, guided the development of the idea, the design of the program, the format of the conference and who have supported the steering committee in times of exhaustion and frustration - we say thank you and acknowledge that your efforts are the ones which often go unrecognised.
We sincerely hope that you see change as a result of this gathering, that your worst fears of being ignored and excluded yet again become a thing of the past. We cannot promise that your experiences, as you make a new life in Australia, will always be filled with positives, but we can guarantee you that you are welcomed, that what you bring to this country is of great importance and is fundamental to the future of Australia.
Thank you for your enthusiasm, your passion and energy. Thank you for making your way to meetings in the middle of winter, for organising representatives and for sharing your wisdom. Thank you for your willingness to engage in processes that we know at times are foreign and fruitless to you, for trying even in the face of resistance.
We look forward to continuing dialogue; most importantly we look forward to being one.
