This section provides resources to assist teachers meet the discipline-specific needs of students with disability. These will be most effective if implemented within a context of inclusive practice.
See the links to strategies for specific disciplines in the left hand menu but remember that inclusive teaching and support practices recognise and respond to a diversity of learning needs and can be applied across most disciplines to enhance the learning of all students. These practices minimise the need for individualised responses and are cost effective, in both time and money.
Some examples of inclusive teaching:
- providing up-to-date reading lists well before the beginning of semester
- positioning yourself thoughtfully and speaking directly to the class
- using a variety of teaching methods to stimulate different learning styles
- clearly identifying key ideas in lectures and assignments
- drawing on the students’ own experiences
- being flexible with assessment methods
- setting clear expectations, especially for assessment tasks.
