Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) is considered to be a neurological disorder. Research has indicated that AD/HD is likely to be caused by biological factors that influence chemical messages activity (neurotransmitters) in certain parts of the brain. Slight imbalances in the neurotransmitters affect the parts of the brain which control reflective thought and the inhibition of ill-considered behaviour.
Adjustments to the learning environment can greatly assist a student with AD/HD, but these need to be tailored to the individual's needs. Examples of teaching adjustments include:
- Adopting a creative approach to the presentation of information: using creative teaching tools such as visual aids and hands-on experience, and engaging as many of the five senses as possible
- Providing both written and oral instructions, and making expectations and requirements clear
- Providing an individual examination room to minimise distractions
- Extending exam times to assist focus and concentration
