Formerly called Special Interest Groups, the ANZSSA Professional Interest Groups (PIGs) are currently undergoing a period of evolution and expansion. Originally these groups tended to be based around the different professional groupings within ANZSSA (eg. Campus nurses, Counsellors, Financial Advisors etc), and some of these groups were more active in certain regions than others.
However, the issues of interest to ANZSSA members tend to fall across the boundaries of many areas and disciplines and members now want to be able to be affiliated with a number of different interest groups simultaneously. For these reasons ANZSSA is inviting members to register their interest in any of a number of Professional Interest Groups as they renew their membership or join for the first time, and also to make suggestions for new interest groups.
If enough members are interested in forming a PIG and at least one member is willing to be the Convenor of the group, then the National Executive may vote to ratify the group. PIGs are free to organise their own specialised activities, often with ANZSSA financial sponsorship. ANZSSA also adds its organisational support to submissions by the PIGs.
To become affiliated with ANZSSA , Professional Interest Groups must submit their constitution which should have objectives consistent with the aims of ANZSSA . Professional Areas contribute to the development and policy formation of ANZSSA by sending delegates to the annual ANZSSA Council meeting.
Professional Interest Groups can be a great way to cultivate discussion and sharing of ideas and resources amongst ANZSSA members. Typically, group activities include some of the following (and more):
- Communication with other group members via e-list
- Professional development events
- A Presentation Stream at conferences
- Presence on the ANZSSA website
We invite members and prospective members to consider whether any of the following existing or proposed groups may be of interest to them, and whether a need exists for a possible new interest group.
