Introduction
The Australia and New Zealand Student Services Association represents a wide variety of professional and lay people, who share a common concern in the welfare and development of post-secondary education students and their institutions in the two countries. ANZSSA is recognised by the AVCC as a lobby group representing the interests of students and staff working on their behalf.
Aims
The basic aims of ANZSSA are:
-
to foster and promote support amongst students and staff;
-
to facilitate the general well-being of the institutional community in universities and other post-secondary institutions;
-
to sponsor regular conferences and organise close professional contact between its members;
-
to promote research;
-
to support and promote the interests of all those engaged in these activities.

The membership thus reflects the view of ANZSSA that post-secondary education students share many common needs and problems regardless of the type of institution at which they are studying or their differing circumstances.
ANZSSA is the umbrella organisation for Student Services Staff. Most members also belong to Professional Interest Groups. Members are invited to nominate up to three special interest groups that reflect their primary interest areas and a portion of their membership fee is allocated to those groups to facilitate professional development activities. Additional fees may have to be paid to join some groups and/or supplementary groups.

Annual individual membership includes complementary affiliation with up to three professional Interest Groups. A range of other membership rates and subscription categories applies depending on eligibility and location. For further information contact the ANZSSA Treasurer directly.

Meetings and Conferences
ANZSSA seeks to be a flexible and responsive organisation which allows its members the advantages of an organised association whilst retaining the maximum freedom to sponsor activities that will benefit the greatest number. ANZSSA provides an opportunity for networking with the interchange of ideas and programmes and offers representation of members at the highest levels of related government activities.
A Biennial Conference is the major ANZSSA meeting. It is a significant and substantial conference lasting for five days which attracts numerous international participants as well as delegates from the Australian States and New Zealand.
Regional and State meetings are the main ANZSSA events between biennial conferences. Regional activities range from informal workshops to major meetings. The organisation of such activities is at the initiative and discretion of local members and financial support is available for substantial projects. Regional committees or coordinators organise activities in each State. Annual conferences are held by the Victorian and New South Wales branches of ANZSSA.
Professional Development Activities
- The Association organises a major conference biennially and this typically attracts significant international interest. The conference location is rotated in Australia. Every sixth year it is held in New Zealand.
- Workshops on Topics relevant to Regional or Interest Groups are held regularly.
- Regular State/Territory Conferences
- Exchange Agreement - ANZSSA has a biennial professional exchange agreement with the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) in the USA.
