There is a lot of information available about doing well in job interviews which you can access, so this section will focus on additional things you may need to think about as a job seeker with disability. You may wish to make appointments with your university Careers Service to practise interview skills and to get some tips and advice.
If you will require reasonable adjustments for the interview, eg.
sign language interpreter or accessible venue (including toilets and
parking), it is best to discuss these after the interview has been
arranged. This ensures that the interview has been secured before any
discussions or negotiation of any adjustments to the interview process
is made. Speak directly to the appropriate person. The most appropriate
person to disclose a disability is the convener of the interview panel
or a member of the panel; this will not necessarily be the person
responsible for organising the appointment. You may wish to put this in
writing (email, fax or letter), also ask them to confirm the
arrangements with you prior to the day. Keep a copy.
You have a right to fair and equitable treatment in the selection
process, so don’t be afraid to ask. Ask how the interview will be
conducted, will there be only one interviewer or a panel. This will
help you to prepare for the interview and you will know what to expect
and what you may need. Be informed on how the adjustments you require
can be organised.
